Make sure watch out for what is below you when you boulder!!

Bouldering can be practised both on real rock and indoor as most climbing gyms usually have a special boulder section.

There are even bouldering-only gyms out there, but these are still rare. In Singapore, there is one and called Climb Asia. I Love it!!

Even though bouldering can be practised alone, you shouldn't underestimate the importance of an experienced climbing partner. You'll not only pick up a better climbing technique, you'll also progress in a lot safer environment. In bouldering ankles and spines are top casualties. The spotter stands below the climber, with arms raised or at the ready.

Some key points to take note:

When spotting increase your awareness of the climber and their body.

Hands are wide open instead of fingers closed.

For higher boulder problems you should use more than one spotter.

Analyze the angle of all the holds and which direction they will be pulled on before the climber climbs.

This will give you an idea of where his body will be at those points and a better idea of where he might fall.

The job of the spotter is to direct the climber's to the bouldering mat and ensure the climber's head do not strike the ground first. This is especially important on uneven ground.

Do not try to catch a falling climber. This will cause more injuries to both spotter and climber.

Take spotting seriously, it is very easy for someone to get injured while bouldering.

Lets think as a spotter should always be used for accident prevention.

Personally I see a spotter as a help to climber to accomplish new climbing moves. The extra push and lift give the climber assurance to learn the move. And once the move is learnt, it can be usually be practiced and refined without extra help. And the learning goes on..

http://bouldering-guide.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full

And hence spotting is important during bouldering.

Spotting is when a crash pad is placed on the ground to break climbers fall. A spotter is assigned. Spotter is a person standing on the ground to prevent the climber from landing badly. The main job of the spotter is to direct the climber's body toward the crashpad during a fall, while protecting the climber's head from hazards.

This variation of climbing can be practiced on large boulders, at the base of larger rock faces/climbing routes, in indoor climbing centres.

For many years, bouldering was usually practiced for individual moves rather than endurance.

Boulder routes are most commonly referred to as problems or routes. This is because the nature of the climb is often short, curious, and much like problem solving. When a problem is solved, artifical restrictions are imposed to increase the difficulty of the problem and thus the ever challenging in bouldering.

Bouldering has developed its own grading system for comparing the difficulty of problems. The most commonly used grading systems are the John Sherman V-grade system, beginning at V0 and increasing by integers to a current achievement of V16. The upper grade of these systems is always increasing as boulderers ascend more difficult problems.

They may also put a crash pad on the ground to break their fall and/or assign a spotter, a person standing on the ground to prevent the climber from landing badly. The main job of the spotter is to direct the climber's body toward the crashpad during a fall, while protecting the climber's head from hazards.

Bouldering is continually gaining in popularity, partly as evidenced by the growth of bouldering areas in indoor climbing gyms and even entire climbing gyms dedicated to bouldering.

So what do you need for bouldering?

1. Rock climbing shoes
2. A chalk bag and chalk
3. A bouldering crash pad (usually for outdoor bouldering.)

Just going to be bouldering indoors?
If so you will probably not need a bouldering crash pad. The easiest route into the centre by far is to take a quick, regular and efficient MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) train to any of a number of city stations.Buses are still available into the city, though we feel the arrival of the MRT has made these redundant - at least for international visitors.

Passengers overburdened with luggage may wish to take a taxi - rides into the city are usually quick and not that expensive (particularly if sharing the cost with a friend). Estimated transfer time to downtown > about 45 minutes from clearance of immigration procedures

Many of the world’s top airlines have frequent flights to Singapore. Among them are British Airways, United Airlines, Air France, Air New Zealand, Qantas Airways, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways and of course, Singapore International Airlines.

Getting Around In Singapore: The efficient and clean public transportation in Singapore makes getting around the Republic a breeze. Singapore's transportation network offers access to every corner of the island, either by bus, MRT (Singapore's underground rail network), taxis, rented cars and motorbikes or even by foot.

Public buses operate from 6 in the morning to midnight everyday and fares are a little cheaper than the MRT, and far more comprehensive. There are also several bus routes especially useful to sightseers. Singapore has two main bus companies plying its roads - the Trans-Island Bus Services and the Singapore Bus Service. Most fares depend on distance travelled and range from 50c to S$1.10 for non-air conditioned buses, and 60c to S$1.40 for air-conditioned comfort.

There are buses charging a flat rate to the destinations displayed on the destination plates in front of the bus. A useful tip for travellers is to avoid rush hour traffic between 8 to 9 in the morning, and 5 to 7 in the evening. Singapore at anytime outside these hours still remains a pleasure to roam about in.

Where To Stay: Hotels are plentiful in Singapore and many are world-class, you’ll have to kick yourself if you can’t find any around. However, I don’t think they have any really low cost dorms or rooms for backpackers. Hotels in Singapore may cost a bit more, but the service offered is very good. In Orchard Road, a great place to stay is The Four Seasons Hotel. The rooms are spacious with tasteful artwork. I think there is like an attendant for each guest.

Where To Eat: Singapore is where you need to be if food and flavor have a special place in your heart: few spots on earth offer the variety of culinary temptations that can be found in the Lion City. Chinese, Malay, Indian, or European - the huge range of choices are made even more appealing by the fact that eating in Singapore can be extremely inexpensive.

The Moomba. Upper Circular Road, serves great Australian food. Michelangelos and Sistina. Authentic Italian food at Holland Village What To See:Wild breakfast at Singapore Zoo. Fancy breakfast with one of the Singapore Zoo's famed animals? This coach tour will give you the experience in a new concept in animal keeping with the zoo's beautifully landscaped gardens and very few cages and of course you will enjoy a 'Wild Breakfast' with the friendly 10 metre python, the Orang Utan and a small-clawed otter Thian Hock Keng Temple in China town.

Where To Shop:Singapore’s main shopping district is at Orchard Road. You can find almost anything you can imagine in the shopping centers here. There is this place called The Forum; which has the biggest Toys ‘R Us in Singapore, kids love it. Electronic goods are sold at duty-free prices in Singapore, and there are many great deals around. Many items are available immediately from their global launch in Japan or Europe.

Best places to shop for electronics in Singapore are at Sim Lim Square, Lucky Plaza and Far East Plaza. You can find everything from digital cameras, DV camcorders, DVDs, cell phones and even GPS equipment. Techie types are really spoilt for choice here.

Entertainment: The hip and trendy like to hang out at Zouk and Velvet Undeground. The two clubs are easily the best clubs in the island. Thos who appreciate classical music would want to check out The Singapore Cultural Theatre and the Victoria Hall.

More about the Southeast Asia can be found here
http://bouldering-guide.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full

Rope cannot be used effectively if knots are tied wrongly.

Single Loop Knot can be used to attach something (carabinars) in the rope.
An example will be Bowline.

Double Loop Knot is similar to Single Loop Knot just that the former add extra security.
A good example will be Double Figure of 8.
For better understand, pictures of the different knots can be found here.

Prusik Knot and Clove Hitch are examples of Hitch which is a type of knot wherein the rope is tied or looped to an object such as a Carabiner. Hitches can be used to control the descent when belaying by applying friction on the rope. You can also tie a Hitch to anchor yourself immediately without a sling.

A stopper knot is tied at the end of a rope to prevent the end from unraveling, slipping through another knot and block the end of rope sliding through beloay/rappel device. Knots commonly used for this purpose are:

Overhand knot
Double overhand knot
Figure of Eight Knot

Two short ropes can form through Bends. The Water Knot and Fisherman's Knot are good examples of Bends.

Practice the basics of rock climbing knots. You better know it well before a climb..Here I will mention about different climbing calls.

To the advanced climbers, you can refresh these climbing calls so as to climb better and safer.

During climbing, the calls are short and precise to avoid ambiguity. Calls will have to be loud during climbing so as to be heard easily. Below are a few commonly used calls:

Call Meaning

ON BELAY
Climber says this to ensure that the belayer is ready and alert.

BELAY IS ON
In response belayer will reply to indicate that he is prepared to belay, after making sure all knots, gates shut, tight on belay, in line with belay and able to brake correctly

CLIMBING
Climber will say this to let the belayer know he is about to begin the climb

CLIMB ON
Belayer’s response indicating that he is ready and the climber can begin climbing

The above rock climbing calls are usually done in order on the ground prior to a climb after all necessary checks on the equipments have been conducted.

TAKING IN
Belayer will take up any slack in the rope requested by the climber.

SLACK
This is requested by the climber so that the belayer will give some slack, usually during clipping/unclipping of runner or top climbing.

TIGHT!
Often called by the climber, either when making an awkward move, or when expecting to fall off.

OFF BELAY
Climber says this when setting up a rappel at the top of a route so that the belayer knows that the climber is tied off to an anchor.

ROPE!
Call to warn other climbers when lowering or throwing out a rope or abseiling, top roping etc.

Calls may vary but do bear in mind that so long that both climbers and belayers have common understanding and agreement on the calls before the climb.
http://bouldering-guide.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full

Learning and adopting proper climbing technique is one of the most important aspects to climbing strong.

Good technique will allow you to use your muscles and skeleton efficiently while reducing injury. Techniques involve precise placements of hands and feet on handholds and weight shifting to achieve maximum stability and balance. Regulation of breathing takes up important role during your climb to slow down fatigue level.

Although techniques and strength goes hand in hand, good mind control will improve technique, strength and endurance tremendously. Good mind control involves warming up, relaxing, visualizing of route, staying calm and breathing.

Warming up allows your body to feel more confident and in control during the climb

During relaxing,
Thinking Nothing Other Climbing by closing your eyes, breathing deeply and visualize to climb confidently.

Visualizing the route will reduce any unnecessary moves which can be energy wasting. Knowing where your rest points and gear placements are can be useful to ensure every move executed is efficient.
Staying calm will keep troubles away. A pair of fresh arm just before the route will allow the mind to focus on the route and thus reducing the trouble surfacing.

Deep, continuous breathing is vital keep oxygenated blood flowing into your fatigue muscles and keeps the mind concentrated on the climb. Mind is a powerful tool that allows your body to travel up the walls that seem difficult.

With practice and effort, these techniques will be a second nature. Good Luck. Have fun!
http://bouldering-guide.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full

So which ones are the really basics ones??

If you’re a new to climbing, in here I will start to state some of the MUST HAVE equipments before advancing to higher level. For the advanced climbers, you may consider renewing the current climbing equipments of yours if it is aging.

Note: Take good care of your equipments and in turn they take care of you.

This is a universal truth and hopefully that goes deep into you from now. Suggestion will be you can use DRY rag to wipe off dirt or mud and NEVER drop your metallic equipments (carabinars, Belaying devices). You never know any micro cracks present which will aggravate.

And now I will highlight some pointers about the different gear and the technical names of climbing equipment.

First of all, Rock Climbing Shoes!!

The correct size and the comfortable level is the MOST vital. Thus you must choose it correctly. Be prepared to invest time and money to find the RIGHT kind of shoes for you.

Note: For Beginners, do not rush to buy shoes that are not too tight. This is because you will not want to feel discomfort during the climb and lose your focus. The shoes will stretch and wearing shoes will be the solution. Remember that durability and comfortable level which the rock climbing shoe that fit well are the most important factors.

Find one pair that can withstand to lots of use and abuse. This is because learning will be tough on your feet at first. Stiff, supportive soles, a substantial rubber rand around the outside will be a wise buy. High-cut shoes that protect and support your ankles will be highly recommendable. Anyway once when you get the feeling of it, you can try out different shoes.

All purpose shoes (Eg. MadRock Flash) will be highly preferred and most popular for the beginners. All-purpose shoes are designed to handle a wide variety of rock climbing situations and perform respectably in all of them. All-purpose shoes are typically cut high to protect your ankles and designed to be comfortable as well as protective.

Next is especially to Advanced Climbers but the beginners can take a look to so you can better prepare next time when you are buying shoes.

There are a lot of types of shoes on the market. Different shoes will work better in different situations. Below is an overview of another climbing shoes present in the market.

High-performance—They offer reliable, and high end performance when proper techniques are executed. High performance shoes are built for competitions and difficult sport-climb routes. High-performance shoes are cut low for added flexibility and lighter weight. They're also designed to fit tight for maximum rock-sensitivity and control.

Slippers: Slippers are NOT ideal for beginners, because they cling to all sorts of
overhanging stuff and nippy little holds easily because of their thin soles for maximum sensitivity. Slippers are lighter and useful during training as it is easy to get in and get out. Beware that slippers can stretch and wear easily. And slippers offer little ankle support but hang the footholds like the second skin. and climbing in these flimsy shoes will harden them up.

Next equipment on the list is Belay Device!!

ATC device is most commonly used due to its ease and light weight. Belay device is a mechanical device used to hold the rope of a belayer. And belay device is important to be well maintained because

When you take good care of your equipments and in turn they take care of you.

Never drop your belay device. You will not want to have micro cracks present in the device which your life depends on during climbing.

Carabiner

A carabiner is a metal loop with a sprung or screwed gate. and they are used for many different things in climbing such as top roping and also belaying. The opening of the carabiner snap close and screw is tightened to secure the gate.

Helmet

For this, I will not elaborate much. The main purpose is to protect the head from injury in falls, but also it will protect you from falling debris when you are climbing. However do not mistaken that you can use any helmet for climbing. One thing to take note: When a helmet takes a major blow or become brittle with age, it should be replaced. Which will offer more protection? Your aging and dented helmet or a new helmet in accordance with manufacture’s recommendations?

Climbing Harness

A climbing harness is a piece of equipment used to secure a person to a piece of rope in climbing or abseiling. A harness forms a chair when you tie-in. Remember that a good fit and comfort in the waist and leg loops is critical.

Sport climbers and indoor climbers will typically use a minimalist harness that is comfortable with sewn gear loops. It allows you to always know that your harness closures are double backed.

Big wall climbers prefer lots of padding because they have a ton of gear and are wearing their harness for a lot longer than a sport or top rope climber will be.
I personally prefer those will padding as comfort is my top concern during climbing.

Know your Harness.

Waist Belt prevents you from falling out of the harness and perhaps it the most crucial part of it. The key here is to make sure it is tight around your waist. A good estimate will be putting three fingers in between the belt and your body. If there is enough room to turn your fingers, the waist belt is not tight enough. This is to make sure the harness you are wearing is not so tight that it is restricts your breathing or movement.

Leg Loops are loops that go around your thighs tight. Similarly the placement of three fingers between the loop and thigh will be a good estimate. Buckles on leg loops can be used to tighten the straps.

Buckles MUST be double backed to ensure highest safety level. Some harnesses makes come with speed buckles which are already double backed. The climber just has to pull the belt part to tighten your waist belt or leg loops.

Gear Loops vary in many different sizes and designs. They are commonly sewn on to your harness and are used to carry gear such as the extra carabinar or quickdraws while climbing.

Belay Loop connects your waist and leg loops makes clipping into anchors a snap. The belay loop isn’t meant to be used as a tie-in point for your rope. Always tie in by threading the rope through both your leg and waist loops.

Padding varies among climbing harnesses. In the winter, harnesses with seat-belt material because you'll probably be climbing less and your thick clothes will act as padding.
Conversely during summer times, you'll want a padded harness since you will be not be in thick clothing as in winter .

Tips for Selecting a Climbing Harness
A harness forms a chair when you tie-in and fit in the waist and leg loops. Heavier climbers should choose a harness with wider leg loops and a thick padded waist to support their lower back. You have to be careful, because the wider straps may cut into your flesh,
Make a point to sit in the harness and make sure it is comfortable before parting your money.

Chalk Bags: Inexpensive but certainly required for serious climbing. Find one that you can put your hands in comfortably and choose one that looks cool too.

So far for climbing.
